| Nervous yet? You will be, after reading this book.I found this book while buying an SAT guide for my nephew, and spent about an hour reading it. While I was impressed by the rates the author charges his students to tutor them (hundreds!), I wasn't impressed with the book. The book seems overly obsessed with scores and scoring higher. I scored above 2300 on the SAT and got into every college I applied to --- including Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, and the top small colleges --- but reading the book with its intense focus on scoring made ME nervous.
The mentality that the author is coming from seems pretty typical of the prep school crowd, at least the ones that I went to college with. And prep school kids do need to do more in order to stand out; it's much easier to get into H/Y/P from the great public high schools of the Midwest than from Eastern prep schools. And prep school kids seem to have this whole stigma against the good public universities, so they regard attending them as a failure, whereas from my Midwestern high school we just saw it as normal and going to an Ivy as a bonus. I don't envy them. But the mentality is intense and neurotic enough to drive anyone crazy.
As an example, he suggests that everyone take the test preferably three times, unless they get a high score to start with, and he gives a whole schedule on which to take the tests so that you have multiple tries. He gives suggestions for which subject tests it's easiest to get a good score on. Some of the practice questions are even about the SAT itself. And periodically in the middle of a hint, he'll say things like, "There's a lot riding on this test." In case you're not feeling enough anxiety already.
People do best on things they find fun. It seems to me that the best way to study for the SAT is to look at it as a puzzle and a challenge, and try to enjoy it. Focusing on scores seems like a way to get nervous for no reason and not to enjoy studying because you're focusing on an abstract thing far in the future. Better to enjoy the present moment.
I'm now an alumni interviewer. Last month I attended a session with admissions officers giving us an introduction to alumni interviewing. We looked at a few real applications (anonymized), and spoke frankly about the merits of each case, using honest language such as "This applicant sounds like a real tool.", debating about whether the applicants seemed to have social skills, and looking at the extent to which the applicants had taken advantage of their high schools' opportunities. It really is true that admissions officers think carefully about the whole person. Scores alone won't get someone into college: a top school could fill their entire entering class with 2400's several times over. Scores are just a signal. High scores and low grades means that the applicant wasn't trying. Low scores and high grades mean that the applicant may not test well, or that their school grades too leniently. And then admissions officers move onto reading the letters and essays.
Of course it is important to study for the SAT, but focusing on scores seems like a bad way to do that, and a good way to get overly nervous about it. In the end, I bought the Laugh Out Loud guide to the SAT --- it's written by a PhD and comedy writer and it seems to communicate a better spirit of fun. My hope is that it will give my nephew a good feeling about the SAT that he can maintain while taking a dozen practice tests in the Official SAT book.
No matter what, just have fun. Read more...

| Saved My Day!!!Another Reviewer stated this book will help raise your score from 600 to 700, but it did more than that for me. I didn't start studying until TWO WEEKS before the test. I dumped the vocabulary cards and math guides and jumped right into the practice tests. My lowest practice score was 1190, my real life SAT score was 1380.
My advice: simulate the real test as best you can. No bathroom breaks, no snacks, no friends, no music, etc. Use a cooking timer to clock yourself, when it dings STOP. Don't leave your desk. Don't stop to review sections, do the whole test at once.
Don't focus on the free online versions, nothing is the same as practicing with pencil and paper.
When you're done, look at your answers and redo all the math problems you did wrong. Pay attention to which type of problems give you trouble or which terms confuse you. The math section is really a Mensa Logic Test in disguise, so after you do this a few times you'll start recognizing the tricks they use. (If it were really a math test I wouldn't have done well because I never got past basic geometry.)
For the Verbal: find something that is completely over your head and read it. This may sound stupid, but it will improve your reading skills dramatically. Search online for the different types of Analogies, look at your answers to see which types give you the most trouble.
Day before the test: Don't review anything, just get the stuff together that you'll need. Put fresh batteries in your calculator. Spend all day having fun. Wash your hair. Being clean is a great ego boost.
Lowest Practice Score: Math 580 Verbal 610
Real SAT: Math 680 Verbal 700

| DisappointingI have two major gripes with this book that really bring it down below other SAT II B E/M review books, particularly the one put out the Princeton review:
1) A lot of the explanations don't display much organization. The phylogenetic tree section, for instance, just sort of threw out various bits of information without actually comparing the different organisms or specifically stating the main points of distinction (particularly development of the body systems throughout the various phyla). I feel that this is a grave error, particularly in that specific section, because the official practice tests and the official test I took before purchasing this book tend more towards questions of main patterns, and while I could reason things out based on what WAS there (and what was in the Princeton Review book, which I'd already used once with great success [760]), reviewing for the SAT II is the third time I've gone through this material.
2) The practice tests contain a number of questions that simply will NOT appear on the actual SAT II, and even those covering things that might appear on the real test are poorly-phrased and in a few cases very badly-diagrammed; this is somewhat disturbing, given that we're talking about a review book for a test written by the college board, whose skill at miswriting questions is almost legendary.
I took the test once with some minimal review from the Princeton Review SAT II Bio book and got a 760; I then purchased this one in the interest of getting more practice tests and some potentially-better explanations. Having gone through, though, I really would suggest avoiding it. The PR one has much better explanations for the few things I couldn't remember immediately from my past biology classes, and has far more realistic practice tests.
Seriously, don't buy this. It's better than nothing, but not much more. Read more...

| Product DescriptionPractice and review questions for all sections of the SAT college entrance test are presented on 500 flash cards. Students will find 200 math cards, 200 grammar cards, and 100 vocabulary cards. The math cards include 75 important math facts that students need to know as strategies for answering math questions, as well as 100 sample SAT problems in both multiple-choice and grid-in formats. The vocabulary cards have two words per card with definitions on the reverse side—a total of 200 new words for test takers to learn. This boxed set of 4 1/2" x 2 3/4" flash cards is designed with a punch hole in one corner of each card. The hole will accommodate a metal key-ring-style card holder enclosed with the cards. Using the holder, students can arrange the flash cards for their Q and A sessions in any sequence that suits their needs—perhaps by general topic, or alternately by leaving out cards with questions and answers that test takers already know well. | INDISPENSIBLE!This is an excellent PSAT workbook, especially if you are taking it for the first time in the sophomore year. It tells you what is and what isn't important with every strand of the Math section, gives succint and helpful tips for tackling Critical Reading section, and provides 5 superbly witten practice tests + a very comprehensive gammar practice (consisting of 50 well-written questions) for honing one's grammar skills. For her junior year PSAT in 2008, my daughter practiced relentlessly all summer long, using Barron's PSAT and McGraw Hill PSAT workbooks. Not only is she writing much better at school this year, she did great on the 2008 PSAT, in which she scored in the upper 99 percentile, including a perfect score (80) in the Writing Skill section! For her upcoming SAT review, my daughter plans to rely mainly on select Barrons products, in addition to College Board and McGraw Hill books. Read more...

| The best math workbook to start your test prepI am an experienced full-time tutor for the SAT and the ACT and I highly recommend this math workbook (over what else is available) for several reasons. First of all, most students now are taking both the SAT and the ACT and frequently the Math IIC Subject Test. The idea of expecting a student to go through three different workbooks is unrealistic. This workbook offers a student a reasonable amount of work to add to his or her already busy life and does a GREAT job of preparing them for all three tests. I use this workbook for ALL of my students because it can challenge the student striving for an "ivy league" test score as well as not overwhelm the student who may be starting out with a 550 SAT math score or a 24 ACT math score. Using this workbook will also quickly illuminate the holes in a student's math skills.
I previously used the Barron's SAT Math workbook and found that it overwhelmed the students who weren't very skilled in math and also, for all students, took too long to complete. This workbook can be completed in a matter of weeks. As the author advises, you would use this workbook in combination with the practice tests in the Real ACT Prep Guide. Read more...

| Great review product for testThe explanations and examples in this book are very brief and general, but provide an excellent source for review. As this is intended to be used as a review rather than a first-time reading, I recommend using it for just that.
There are numerous small typographical and print errors throughout the book that present equations and diagrams incorrectly. These will be easily spotted by the careful reader, as many times the mistakes will conflict with concepts stated elsewhere. The errors are few and trivial enough, however, to make the book worth the buy.
It is a quick, short, effective read and definitely made a difference in my preparation for the Physics Subject Test. Read more...
