| Great Strategy Guide for the SAT'sThough experts claim one really cannot raise one's SAT score more than 10-30 points at best, this guide can do some other things that are not precisely fact-related.
"How to ACE the SAT" provides strategies for answering questions, practices and writing guides. The key is in the subtitle "Without Losing Your Cool." Relaxation is probably the key to test-taking. I can attest to that! If I was confident on exams, I did really well. If I was worried and nervous, I froze up. Over the years, I learned to take tests in a relaxed state by going to Marx Brothers movies the night before, by creating test flash cards, by employing many practice strategies. Yes, I still take exams professionally, so I know the benefit of practice.
Another use of the book is to identify weaknesses. Let's say doing math problems is not your thing. If you were to use this book early in your academic pre-university career and focus on the next year's classes, you could hope to focus in on subjects you need to brush up.
This book is readable, has a very pleasant layout and has a lot of information. It looks like something a parent could use with a child together, reading practices and strategies and discussing academics. I did well on my SAT's, but as a student, I would have LOVED to have had this book. I would have felt great going in after such a practice to take the exam.

| World inspiration for needlepoint projectsLike many other stitchers, I love textiles of all kinds. I buy vintage embroidery at thrift shops, my floors are covered with oriental rugs, and I have a huge stash of fabric in the garage which I never use. Knight has taken her inspiration from all over the world to create this delightful book of needlepoint projects.
The book is divided into broad geographical sections: Asia, Middle East, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Most sections have five projects in them, ranging from small (an Islamic Bookmark) to large (many pillows). There are unusual projects, such as a draught excluder, a pencil case and several bags. The book concentrates on wonderful projects and presents them well.
Each geographic section begins with a two page introduction discussing artistic influences and fiber art in the continent. Each project has a full picture and several close-ups of portions of the stitching. The material list includes finishing materials and each project includes instructions about how to finish the design. A short introduction about each project is also included.
This book has done an outstanding job of surveying a large subject, exotic textiles, and finding a selection of adaptations which will suit all tastes in needlepoint, from traditional to contemporary

| Unrealistically hardSure, being overprepared gives you a sense of confidence when entering the test room, but the extent that this book went was utterly impractical to the point of being innaccurate about what truly is on the test. For example, it bombards you with slews of obscure literary terms, tells you that you may have to read poetry in unitelligible local dialect, and oh, knowing 500+ years of the history of literature may help. After trying the practice problems on this test I was in a state of desperation (of course I procrastinated so this is the day before the test)and was prepared to just not show up on test day because it seemed so hopeless. However, after trying the Princeton Review book, I decided that if the problems were more like PR's the test actually might be doable. While the test was hard, it was no where near Barron's level; PR was much more accurate. I couldn't break 700 on Barrons and ended up getting a 780 on the real thing. Unless you have a ton of time to prepare, I really would not recommend Barrons. In the end though, what will prepare you the most for the SAT II Literature are the skills you've acquired over the years in English class and reading challenging poetry and prose on your own time.

| Beautiful and useful.......GOURD CRAFTS FOR THE FIRST TIME. At last, a book that meets my expectations. Marilyn Host starts with the assumption you have already grown your gourds, or purchased them from a nearby market and are ready to work with them. She covers everything from identifying the individual gourds by type to selecting the general materials you will need for your projects, such as soap, bleach, scouring pads, knives, spoons, glue sticks, scissors, sandpaper, pencils, rags, saws, drills, brushes, paints and dyes, sponges, and twine as well sealing agents. She then describes the steps for preparing the gourd by cleaning the surface and interior, and carving the gourd while it is pliable. Assembly of a specific item may involve combining forms, puncturing and/or extracting sections of the surface, as well as painting and/or decoupage. Using photos and well written text, Goldman describes in great detail the construction of a number of gourd products ranging from containers to decorative pieces.
While this little book is very thorough, the projects are relatively complex and mostly for adults. I personally would use this book with older girls, but not younger children (especially most little boys) unless you are working one on one with a responsible child. If you plan to use gourds for a group craft project, be prepared to do the prep work involving knives and drills yourself. You can then let the kids apply paints, dyes, and glue to their heart's content. There are some nifty ideas for masks, bird houses and luminaries but all require puncturing and cutting. This is an excellent craft book.
