| Well Really!The title should have given away this would be not my sort of novel/poem/poetic prose/prosaic poetry. Being familiar with the old 'By the Rivers of Babylon', and having grown up in an era where people listened to Boney M, hic. The two words that must be included in this review are pretentious and pomp: what a load of pretentious pomp! Who did this woman think she was? Really! No offense intended, but hello! There is a war going on, millions of Jews, gypsies and soldiers are dying, and she comes out with a collection of twit about how her love is so great that it will save all the world's problems...well. Yes, I believe in love, it is a marvellous thing, those who have not experienced it should try it sometime, but I'd like to contrast this with that 80's song by Mr Mr, containing the lyrics: 'The sun will rise without you...the world won't end without you'. Although it may feel like these things have happened on a personal level, most people keep things in perspective and try to avoid becoming delusional, to avoid thinking they or their love is the answer to starvation in the Sahel, or something. My other complaint about this poetic rant, is that as far as I could see, just about 'nothing' happened, there was no plot, nothing to keep my interest, and it was all incredibly vague. Moreover some of her metaphors just killed me, 'there is a cat crawling in my sex', good for you girl, at least it was good for a laugh in the staffroom, that one...
It has two stars and not one, simple since some of the statements about motherhood and children later on in the book were real gems, the single reason why I was pleased with having read this book, and even more pleased to have come to the end of it.
