| The Ring of McAllisterThe Ring of McAllister is a very good book written by Robert Marantz. A mystery that is filled with over one thousand vocabulary words that must be known for students taking the SAT test, has a glossary with the words highlighted so that the reader learns the words while reading the text.
The Ring of McAllister is a mystery that took place in a very small town called Red Fork. The main Characters are seventeen year old high school students that are just starting their summer vacation as their junior year just ended. The characters names are Will, Katie, Ty, Laura, and Dr. Perez, which is Laura's father. There are a couple of others but they weren't really main characters.
Will, Katie, and Ty have been best friends for years. There is a mansion next door to Will's house known as Stone Manor. | Beyond anything I expectedApparently, nobody told Christina Myers what she was writing. See, this was supposed to be a shallow review book, which glossed over some basic literary terms, followed by half a dozen practice tests. Instead, Ms. Myers wrote a high-quality literature textbook that will actually still be helpful after the SAT.
It has everything a normal SAT book has, if not more. 9 practice tests (including two "diagnostic" tests, which are a little harder), and tons of questions in each tpic. It also has a section of twenty-five questions on each of the book's seven topics for more focused testing (for those of you slow on math, this is the equivlent of almost another three tests).
As for the actual topic review, it's superb. She explains even the most obscure terms in a simple way, and makes sure you can't finish the book without being able to analyze a poem of incredible difficulty (I learned alot, and I'm a literature major!). She also throws in a superb chapter on writing skills, supposedly to help on the SAT 1 writing test, but really because she decided that a proper literature textbook should have that.
And that's exactly what this is - a proper literature textbook. Don't let the brand-name or the word "SAT" on the cover fool you - if you want to learn to understand literature for whatever reason, this book is for you.
On the other hand, if you're just looking for a review book for the test and you're not aiming for the high grades, this book may be a bit too demanding. The tests are hard and the review is long, and it mixes the basic terms with the more sophisticated ones. If you're looking for the easy, mediocre book, this isn't it. Read more...

| Best of its kind I've ever worked withAs a college professor and long-time test-prep tutor, I've evaluated the gamut of test-prep resources. This is, hands-down, the best math SAT book I've seen: clear, articulate, and accessible without being condescending. I was so impressed that I researched (Googled) the author, and found out that he's won several teaching awards as a high school math and science teacher in New Jersey, which may explain this book's effectiveness: it's written by a teacher who can anticipate student questions and areas of confusion, not a desk jockey. After using it with a few kids, I have decided to make it the required math text for all my student clients. I'm wondering if there'll be one for the verbal section, too.. Read more...

| great book, but few slight drawbacks.i would definitely recommend this book for anyone taking the u.s. history subject test. the review is great, and there are helpful test questions at the end of each section to test how well you soaked in the information. the information is concise, so for crammers all the information is laid out. there are lame jokes in it, but that i guess in a way makes the text less dull. it will be hard to score well if you haven't ever covered the information presented, though i think this book does well to teach it, you'll just need invest the time and effort. like many said, the practice test are very similar to the tests. the only complaint is that there are only 2 practice tests. i would recommend this for those who are taking AP U.S. History as well since they both cover the same information.
