| Very Happy with "STEP BY STEP SAT with Official SAT Study Guide Solutions"!I am a parent many years removed from algebra and geometry so I was somewhat limited at being able to help my daughter with SAT test preparation especially with the math portion. We first purchased the "Official SAT Study Book" by the College Board because it was recommended by the guidance department of my daughter's high school since it contains previous real SAT exams for practice and the real questions are considered the best way to practice for the test. Unfortunately, only answers and not solutions are provided. The College Board provides some solutions on-line, but my daughter found them not very useful. The math problem solutions were particularly bad. With "STEP by STEP ..." it was far more convenient to have this book for constant reference and there was far more in the book than just the solutions.
I originally found out about "STEP-BY-STEP SAT ..." through viewing the author's web site. My daughter worked with an earlier version of the book and it helped her tremendously. This book spells out complete solutions to the College Board book and has the step-by-step study program with vocabulary and math formulas. Particularly, the math was critical because as I mentioned I hadn't worked with geometry, advanced algebra, etc., in years and could not help her much especially with the harder problems. I really liked (and more importantly so did my daughter!) the format of the math question explanations which often covered solutions line by line. Also the math questions were referenced to math formulas which was useful. Beyond the math and special math formula sheets, we liked the list of several hundred actual SAT words and of course the general step by step guidance and test-taking advice. The sentence completion and critical reading questions are tackled using what the authors call a "key words" approach, which I thought was very effective. The end result is that my daughter performed well on the SAT (up from 1610 for all 3 sections to 1880) and now has a great chance of getting into the local state university to get a great but affordable education and leave me some money for my retirement!
How can you criticize a book that helped my daughter bump her score well over 200 points and will probably end up saving me thousands in tuition for a great state school versus an expensive private alternative? Well, picky me thinks a couple of the math diagrams could have been a little larger. However to be fair, this is a probably a function of my "old" eyes as my daughter calls them because she had no complaint in this area.
