| A steal at 15 cents a problem....I am far from being a math genius, but math has always clicked for me. For my sister, however, math meant sitting down, solving, and hitting herself afterwards when she remembers some stupid mistake that could have been prevented. For her, the knowledge was there, but the connection wasn't. Often I would try to help her solve math problems only to frustrate the both of us. While shopping online, I remembered that Charles Gulotta's 500 Key Words to the SATs book was exceptional. Taking the leap of faith, I bought the Math Book as a "gift" for my sister. She wasn't thrilled but after much pestering, she reluctantly agreed to give it a chance. I was thrilled when my sister looked at the first few problems and was able to fully understand them after reading Charles' explanation. Curious, I grabbed the book from my sister and was awed by Gulotta's ability to lucidly explain each problem. He was able to anticipate many of the SAT's tricks and even carefully explained ways to avoid such pitfalls. Often while studying, I would hear my sister gasp as she realizes that Gulotta had predicted her error. I am satisfied with the quality of this book and recommend it to others. SAT math isn't complicated, just tricky. Gulotta seems to know his stuff when it comes to avoiding these pitfalls. Read more...

| the ideal springboard for test prepI have used this book and its companion Math Workout for many years as a prep guide to tutor students. It should be digested over about 6 weeks, and should be used along with a book of practice tests to practice the techniques introduced in the chapters and problem sets. Also, the book's content requires drilling and pacing (practice practice) to work. Do not buy it with "Cracking the SAT" (which is a condensed version of the 2 workout books combined with a couple practice tests.) Explanations for all problem answers are given, making it helpful in understanding implementation of strategies. The occasional typos and, worse, occasional wrong answer choices listed for revised problems (with the old problem explanation accompanying) make the editing of this book sometimes surprisingly sloppy. The flash cards are silly, since flash cards only work when self-prepared, but they do have nice sentence examples. Still, the basic messages of this book--with its Math Workout twin--are the best available. Read more...

| This book WORKS!I was really nervous about the new writing part of the SAT so I bought six review books: this one, and ones from Barron's, Princeton Review, Kaplan, REA and Rocket Review. Some of them have their good points, but one-the slickest, and supposedly the "ultimate"-is shallow and concerned mainly with promoting its author, and some are surprisingly poorly written-not encouraging for a writing textbook! "Conquering the SAT Writing" was the only one I used for more than one sitting; the others I skimmed and put back on the shelf. The great thing about this book is its systematic approach. You take a practice test, then a very comprehensive answer key shows you which lessons in the book to review to hammer home some point about grammar or writing strategy. It works really well. It is also extremely clear, concise and well-written. My PSAT writing score was a 560, which I was very unhappy with, but then I used this book for a few weeks (and worked with a tutor for the essay who also used this book) and brought my score up to a 740 on the SAT writing, and got a 12 on the essay.
Now I'm thinking about using "McGraw-Hill's SAT", which I just bought, to help me with the math and reading for the next go around, because it uses a similar kind of approach. It helps, also, to take at least 3-4 real practice SATs as part of your prep. Read more...

| Avoid -- better choices availableDo not buy this book. The problems are way too hard. If you think this book is like the real test, you will be totally demoralized. My daughter and I consistently scored 150 points lower on this book's tests than on Princeton's practice tests. Also, very sloppy editing. The answer choices are A through E, but the answer sheet only has bubbles for A through D! I found at least one solution that was incorrect. Another thing, in the problem explanations, they always show the "graphing calculator" method first, then "alternatively", explain the mathematical solution. The mathematical method should be explained first.
It's been recommended to me to use the College Board's books for authentic, real tests, so I'm going to try that next.

| The SAT book that makes you smileOut of the numerous SAT books I tried, this was the only book that truly made a difference.
The strategies in this book are great. Their formula for the essay is simple and effective. The math is explained in detail that is very understandable, especially if you are not math smart. But their strategy for the Critical Reading was what really stood out to me. So simple and yet so very effective. I personally had a tremendous score increase in this section, simply by following this book's strategies and taking multiple practice exams.
And perhaps the best thing about this book is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. It cracks a few jokes and pokes fun at the exam, a very important reminder that this test is only a test and does not determine the rest of your life. Its lighthearted approach will make it easier for the reader to relax and simply do the best that they can.
The only issue is that this book comes with only three practice exams. I reccommend Barron's if you feel the need to practice more. Their exams are a bit harder than the real thing, which makes it easier when you take the actual exam.
